MD - This Is The End / The World’s End

Lazy yes, but it’s hard not to co-review two apocalyptic comedies showcasing the not-so bright-young-things-any-longer from over there and over here.

TITE is the more smug and self-referential and apart from a smart bit of counter-casting in Michael Cera and Emma Watson everyone plays themselves but even more annoyingly so. An ad-lib banter fest in which the cast are clearly having a lot fun than the audience. James Franco is really having a rough year.

TWE is more nuanced and structured. This is a film about growing older and a romanticised past that never really existed. Simon Pegg does a great job managing to be both annoying and touching as a character we all knew when we were younger.

The more the aliens emerge the less interesting it becomes and the final scenes borrow gratuitously from Hitchhikers Guide.
