Apologies for an even longer delay than Conor, but there were loads of films that I wanted to catch up on, many due to your recommendations here. Still many to see (Berberian Sound Studio, A Royal Affair, Take This Waltz, Once Upon A Time In Anatolia, Queen of Versailles, Untouchable, etc) and would appreciate feedback on whether any are worth making the extra effort for.
Rather than worst movies of the year I've put down the ones I found disappointing, and apologies in advance as I'm including some that are highly rated by others here.
DISAPPOINTMENTS OF 2012
Skyfall - a decent movie, well acted (though the performance of Javier Bardem over-rated), no decent female role bar Dench, locations good but unexciting key sequences and a totally anticlimactic final shootout. Mendes not a Bond director, not seen a truly decent one since Goldeneye.
Shame - good movie, Fassbender and Mulligan great as per, but after Hunger this was a huge letdown.
Young Adult - based on the reviews I was expecting a lot from this, and while entertainingly passed the time it was much ado about nothing. See instead Linda Fiorentino in the Last Seduction for a bad gal hitting a small town.
Pitch Perfect - again mildly amusing, but Anna Kendricks and others can do so much better.
Promotheus - Christ. Where to start? Fassbender great, others passable, but Ridley should just have left well alone. Managed to have a good Friday afternoon snooze through some of it, cosy seats in Camden Odeon, recommended.
The Raid - After the eighty ninth close combat scene I got a bit woozy.
Seven Psychopaths - Great first thirty minutes, then headed to the desert and lost its way.
Everything or Nothing - pretty tough to make a history of the Bond franchise dull, particularly with the participation of everyone bar Connery, but against all odds the makers managed it.
Killing Them Softly - again, as per Steve McQueen, I expected more from Andrew Dominik after Jesse James.
RECOMMENDED
The House I Live In, Charlie Is My Darling, Ted, The Master, Argo, Amour, Avengers Assemble, The Hunt, The Imposter, Nostalgia For The Light (perfect companion piece to NO), Descendants, Life of Pi, Marley, Shadow Dancer.
TOP 10
10 - Shut Up And Play The Hits - First doc in the list, your enjoyment will depend on how much you like LCD Soundsystem. Great live stuff from their last ever gig, and reflections the following day from James Murphy on giving it up.
9 - Looper - Much cleverer than people gave it credit for, loved it from start to finish.
8 - Coriolanus - Again not for everyone, and not the Bard's best, but the text was superbly cut for the production and a powerhouse directorial debut for Fiennes, deserved some awards season prominence, but was probably released at the wrong time of the year.
7- Searching for Sugar Man - Feelgood movie of the year, I won't give anything away, but it's as heartwarming a doc as I've seen in years. And about to win an Oscar this evening.
6 - The Dark Knight Rises - Was bored by the second movie, but this a perfect way to end the trilogy. Three hours flew by.
5- Five Broken Cameras - A first hand account of non-violence resistance in a West Bank village under threat from encroaching Israeli settlements. Powerful, frustrating and hopefully will get a wider audience if it wins an Oscar, but too difficult for the Academy.
4 - Silver Linings Playbook - Great performances, I believed that the movie really did have a heart, extremely funny at times and more deserving of Oscars than those that are likely to win this evening.
3 - Rust and Bone - Marion Cotillard just gets better and better, a beautiful movie, faultless performances all round and a return to form after the over-rated A Prophet.
2 - West of Memphis - Arrived in the cinemas between Xmas and New Year and got lost in the ether, the 150 minute running time of a movie about a miscarriage of justice in Arkansas in 1993 didn't appeal to many with end of year hangovers. A shame, as it's stunning, the ability of the individuals involved to cope with their incarceration for two decades is humbling. Great cinematography and a wonderful soundtrack by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis also. Try to see on DVD, or hopefully on Storyville soon.
1- Lawrence of Arabia (extended cut and reprint) - Released in its previously unshown extended 227 minute cut, reprinted and restored, with the original pre-curtain music and interval part of the cinematic experience. Easily the most magical movie trip of 2012, the only film I loved without reservation, and justifiably included for the new cut.
Geoff interesting list. I will seek out west of memphis which I missed at the time. Re-releases as films of the year....had I known I'd have chosen Phantom Menace in 3D!
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's a cheeky one, but it was easily the best cinema experience of the year for me. Went to see other great re-issues also but this kinda justified by being a new cut and reprint, maybe! You'll love West of Memphis, unsure about Rust and Bone as it's not for all, will depend on your mood. And movie quiz next Thur?
