...and always doomed to negative comparison. But Sam
Raimi has pulled of something here. It pays homage both to Baum's books and
MGMs vision and much more with nods from Evil Dead to Willy Wonka
There’s a lot to go with here - some genuine
schlock, pathos and neat effects. The story soundly sits in the best
'redemptive soul' and 'fairy tale' tradition. Bizarrely James Franco looks like
he's just woken up after a lost weekend throughout, but the witches are all fab
and even the china girl (oh oh oh oooh) is not too annoying - the monkey is
though.
Sturdy stuff that works on all levels and - as
someone who can find plenty of faults in the original – it’s as worthwhile a 'sequel'
as could be expected
6/10
