MD - The Great Gatsby

This unnecessarily raucous and overpowering adaptation cranks everything up Jason Statham-style with about as much subtlety. It’s a shame because the look is there and the acting – when the characters are allowed to slow down for a minute – is universally sound.

The problem is that Luhrmann seems so determined to get us to the next party we don’t have time to work though the hangover from the last one.  So potentially interesting pauses are used as precursors to the next event rather than the opportunity to establish character motivation and real relationships.

The decision to use an RnB soundtrack in preference of the exhilarating music of the period might be the biggest clue as to who this is for and why it was made.
That said the novel is no.2 in the bestsellers this week behind Dan Brown, so all is not lost.
5/10
